The Albedo Effect

(Oulu, January 2020)

Thankfully, the snow just returned to Northern Ostrobothnia, after what they called as the warmest winter in 100 yrs.

I remember back in 2015 when we had massive forest fires in Central Borneo; the haze reached Bandar Seri Begawan even though BSB (Bruneian Borneo) & Palangkaraya (Indonesian Borneo) were like 2000+km apart. Schools in BSB advised parents to keep their kids indoors. I could barely imagine how people survived those days in Palangkaraya. In fact, many didn’t, especially babies & the elders.

I know nothing about climate science but according to this sobering talk, forest fires in the equator & Arctic ice melting are somehow intricately linked. Our lives are connected although we live continents and oceans apart.

The less white ice layers we have ➡️ the less heat from the sun will be reflected back to the atmosphere ➡️ the more heat will be absorbed by the ocean & land ➡️ the warmer the earth will be ➡️ the more episodes of extreme weather we have all around the planet ➡️ more forest fires & more ice is melting in the poles ➡️ the vicious cycle continues.
